Magdalena Gamayo

Magdalena Gamayo, a Filipino weaver who is a lead-practitioner of the Ilocano tradition of pinagbel, was born on August 13, 1924 in Pinili, Ilocos Norte. She learned to weave at the age of 16 from her aunt by copying her patterns. She has also taught herself the traditional patterns of “binakul” which is a woven cloth with square and rectangle forms making up designs such as kusikos (whirlwind), maruprup (milky way), and sinanpaddak ti pusa (cat’s paw print). Moreover, Magdalena Gamayo also taught herself to recreate designs that allowed her to have a wide range of design ideas that lead to her mastery of rare weaving techniques. She was then recognized as Manlilikha ng Bayan in 2012 as she emplified the best of Ilocos Region and the country’s abel weaving tradition.
